Fetal health is evaluated, in part, by assessment of fetal heart rate patterns. The primary goal of antepartum fetal surveillance (antepartum testing) with the nonstress test (NST) and the contraction stress test (CST) is to identify fetuses at risk of hypoxic injury or death and intervene to prevent these adverse outcomes, if possible.

It is done in the antenatal period using a non stress test (NST). The Interpretation of FHR patterns is believed to be standardized as all possible types of patterns have been described and analyzed. However we have described a new pattern, which needs further study.

A normal nonstress test will show a baseline fetal heart rate between 110 and 160 beats per minute with moderate variability (5- to 25-interbeat variability) and 2 qualifying accelerations in 20 minutes with no decelerations. A nonstress test, also known as fetal heart rate monitoring, is a simple and non-invasive test performed after 28 weeks of pregnancy. It measures the heart rate of the fetus in response to its movements. The nonstress test is called so because it does not pose any physical stress to you or your fetus. Non-stress tests are rated as reactive and non-reactive. The test is reactive if the baby's heart beats faster when she moves.
